Dear Kitty,
When I was in Berlin I watched a piece by Meg Stuart, did I tell you about it? I found the ending really moving. There was a mini installation with a printed letter about how sad the writer was about humanity losing their connection with and empathy for the planet. The whole piece was about “if a tribe visited form the future, would would they have to share or say? What stories, what folklore..”
Anyway, at the end really pumped up club/rave music came on and the 8 dancers started doing this…..incredibly honest/real/earthy/tribal dance. It was the first time I watched a “tribal dance” that actually felt very human/real/believable/trance like. I wanted to join in! And suddenly it made me remember that humans have been dancing for thousands of years. And then it felt so obvious why people dance. And I realised people are still doing it, that’s why they go out clubbing. People still feel the need for this thing, moving and moving and moving for the sake of moving and being with other bodies. It made me trust contemporary dance again. And I had two tears come out of my eye haha.

Yours sincerely,
Bunny

Dear Bunny,

Thank you for your letter! It is so beautiful what you wrote - this understanding!
It have happened something similar with me. Understanding the Need of Dancing - understanding for the need of celebrating your body existence in a shared space and that we have done it as long as human have been existing. This is what clubbing is for me. Self healing. Dark space, one new God - the DJ, and his declaration - the Music / rhythm, DJ has the power and responsibility to guide you through this emotional travel, it is deep travelling inside yourself, it is meditation. You are lead by minimal drum, kick, you are moving through and with it. Recently I haven't practised it for a long time, because now, I really need special and safe environment to go there, to this trip. It is not easy, if you are surrounded with people who wants to party, and are there for another reasons and not for the music of for the dance. Clubbing with minimal techno music is exciting, as the rhythm is so simple, it gives you so many ways how to dance and how to interpret it, and how to make it travel inside your body. It is a frame and you are the freedom in it. Another thing what techno music is doing is that it makes us individualistic, we dance alone, we dance eyes close, we dance with ourselves and for ourselves, we dance with the music. Same time it gives you the possibility to be in a shared space but still rest and enjoy yourself, and look deeper inside yourself. We don`t need to socialise all the time and use spoken language, we can use body language to see each other (inner)spaces.

Yours sincerely,
Kitty
